Oros, a graduate of the Brandery startup accelerator, just launched a Kickstarter to bring their space age apparel to consumers. The startup utilizes aerogel, a unique synthetic material used by NASA in spacesuits, to insulate jackets and other outerwear. Oros’ aerogel is proprietary:
Composed of over 90% air, our proprietary SolarCore aerogel has the lowest thermal conductivity of any solid. What does that mean? That it’s not only extremely strong, durable, and flexible; but it’s 2- to 8-times more effective than traditional insulation. Plus, SolarCore is compression-resistant and waterproof —something your old goose down jacket certainly isn’t…With a rating of -50°C (-58°F), the Oros Lukla Jacket will keep you toasty down to ungodly temperature. 1
As noted above, Oros has taken to Kickstarter. The campaign, their second, is aimed at expanding their line beyond jackets. Oros had an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign early last year, raising more than $319,000. With this campaign, Oros is introducing lines of gloves, beanies, and pants to go along with their jackets:
As of writing, the current campaign has raised just over $69,000 of a $310,000 goal. There is 28 days left in the campaign. If you can’t wait, you can pick up the first version of the jacket, for men or women, for $299 on the Oros website.
