ISTE 2017: New Zealand Startup Kami Is Your Paperless Classroom Hero
Kami is the most downloaded and highest rated PDF app on the Chrome Web Store and G Market Place. It’s a PDF viewer, annotator and collaborative educational tool that is over 3 million users strong. Kami helps students learn, create and collaborate.
The PDF has long taken the place of the ditto or the handout. Just about everything that was “handed out” in schools decades ago, now come in PDF format. Books come in PDF format as well. That’s why there needed to be a PDF viewing tool that was choc full of features and at the same time easy enough for a kindergartner to use. Kami is that app.
Whether the teacher is passing out an eye opener, a newsletter, an assignment, a book or a worksheet, students can use Kami anytime, anywhere and with just a few clicks. Kami is also an easy way for students to create directly to PDF and then sync their assignment, creation or project back to Google Classroom or Google Drive.
Kami’s power of collaboration means that students can immediately collaborate with each other under the direction of the teacher and save their work right into Kami.
The company also gets rave reviews from teachers and schools with students with special needs. The Star Academy is a recognized leader in education for Bay Area students with special needs. In 2016, 40 of their students in grades 6-12 used Kami to help them reach their goals for National Novel Writing Month.
“For those students who struggle with reading or typing, Kami’s text to speech tool and voice annotation tools have been a huge help. For these and many other reasons, they are moving to a digital platform and digital storage; Kami is making this possible for them.” the company shared in a blog post.
Kami is being used in 10,000 K-12 schools across the country, but it’s not just for education. Their full featured PDF tool can be used by business and higher education. Even students at Harvard Medical School are using Kami.
“With Kami everything is a breeze. Add the fact that I can pull PDFs directly from my Google Drive. Kami is a great product” Howard Li, a Harvard Medical School student said.
