The largest EdTech conference in the western hemisphere is headed to San Antonio next month. ISTE, The International Society For Technology In Education is a non-profit organization that serves educators interested in better use of technology in education. They’re the largest group in the world focused purely on EdTech.

Their annual conference packs in tens of thousands of administrators, superintendents, teachers, technology decision makers and even students. The conference is jam packed with how to sessions, keynotes, round table discussions and the biggest ed tech playground in the world. In the expo hall at ISTE, all attendees can go hands on with the latest innovations headed to the K-12 classroom.

Last month, ISTE announced, that Richard Culatta had taken the reigns as CEO of the international organization. If the name sounds familiar that’s because prior to this job, Culatta directed the Obama Administration’s office of education in technology. Prior to that he served as Chief Innovation Officer for the state of Rhode Island. He also led the Office of Educational Technology at the US Department of Education, a role he is most well known for.

In this position ISTE was seeking someone that had the experience in education and technology and the ability to think progressively and remain on the cutting edge.

“His signature Rhode Island initiatives included plans to begin developing and testing a state 5G wireless network, launching a program for free textbooks, working to increase computer science opportunities in schools and raising $1.5 million for the Governor’s Innovation Office.” EdScoop reported.

At the federal level, Culatta spearheaded the Department of Education’s #GoOpen campaign designed to promote sharing resources between states and districts.  While educators were all for these initiatives, the publishing industry took note saying that the initiative was “improperly tipping the free market scales”.

The organization has over 100,000 members and drew over 20,000 to their annual conference in Denver last year. This year’s conference is in San Antonio June 25-28th. You can get more info here.
