The story of Robbie Cabral and his trip to Shark Tank is one of those rags to riches stories we could easily see in a movie.
Cabral had lost his job and was spending time in the gym on a fairly regular basis. He kept noticing that people would either lose the keys to the padlocks for their lockers or even lock the keys in the lockers. That resulted in a lot of locks being cut off at his gym. There had to be a better way.
We looked into it and keyed padlocks sell 2x better than their combination counterparts. People like the speed and convenience of of slipping key in the lock, turning it and getting it right off rather than fiddling with a combination. But still there was a better way. Cabral thought why not use your thumb print to unlock the padlock. I mean your fingers are always with you.
Cabral set out on a journey to bring the lock which he christened Benjilock, to market. It was a hard road over a number of years. At one point he and his wife were at odds because it looked like the Benjilock would be nothing more than a great idea.
But like most gritty entrepreneurs Cabral wasn’t going to let himself or his family down. He pushed on, created a prototype and brought it to CES 2017. It was there, during the annual CES Eureka Park Shark Tank Open call where he pitched producers of the hit show. He eventually won the chance to pitch in front of the sharks themselves.
Cabral is Dominican. When he went onto the hit tv show, A-Rod was one of the shark’s and Cabral’s friends and family thought he would end up doing a deal with the New York Yankee’s star and the current Mr. Jennifer Lopez. Cabral and A-Rod hit it off immediately when Shark Tank aired. It looked like a home run. But then, Mr. Wonderful, Kevin O’Leary, offered Cabral a deal worth $200,000 and the young entrepreneur shocked everyone and went with it.
“After working on Benjilock for years I wanted to get it into the hands of people everywhere as fast as possible and I knew I could get there with O’Leary” Cabral told nibletz.com in a telephone interview last month.
Cabral spoke with us at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Watch the video above where he describes the product that is being licensed by Hampton/Brinks. He also talks about Mr. Wonderful himself.
