The days of sitting around your grandparents living room after Christmas dinner and watching home videos or slide shows are over. The days of having your photographs printed at the local drug store and sending them in the mail to your extended family are over as well. Sure it only takes a few minutes to drop off a roll of film or upload pictures from an SD card, but we’re all too busy for that.

A group of French entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts have created a way to share memories with loved ones, even when they are miles apart. In fact, Hopen Family doesn’t even require a computer. All you need is a TV with an HDMI connection and you can be sharing memories, photos and videos, instantly.

We did a little bit of research when we first discovered Hopen Family. We looked into those old webTV boxes and found out that a huge segment of users were seniors, mostly grandparents. The biggest thing WebTV was used for with that group was email and sending photos. Imagine the pain of having to set up a WebTV box on the television and then explaining to your grandparents how to login, how to use it and what it can be used for. More time was spent trouble shooting via telephone than actually enjoying communication and memories.

They’re too cumbersome, too hard to use and if you’re like me, buying grandma and grandpa a smartphone, may mean hours of providing more tech support.

What Hopen Family has done is created the easiest way for families and friends to share memories, pictures and video, with each other via an HDMI dongle and a TV, and who doesn’t own a TV.

The Hopen Family device simply connects to the HDMI port. Families pick an affordable plan, 2 users is free and unlimited users is just 9.99€, so very affordable. Once a plan is selected, you just put the dongle into the television and voila. You can take pictures and videos and send them to one another via Hopen Family, no computer required. The moments will just be there, on the screen.

They designed Hopen Family to be easy for seniors to operate and start sharing right away.
