If your feet could talk what would they say? What would they say about your workplace? What would they say about your physical activity.
Your feet take the brunt of the load when you’re doing any kind of physical activity, especially when you’re at work. There are hundreds of gadgets at CES 2018 that can tell you how many steps you’ve taken. There are even more “fitness tracking” products on the market today. Most of them are based on an accelerometer. These devices know when you’re making a walking or running motion. But what kind of impact is that activity having on your body?
A French startup called ZhorTech has created smart shoe technology that can track how many steps you’ve taken, how much weight is being put on your feet. Whether or not you’re using good posture and even if you’re working too hard.
The technology is called S-Cube, by Digit Sole, a ZhorTech company. They called it S-Cube because it’s the “smart safety shoe”. Project Manager Malik Issolah explained that in France the government has strict standards in place pertaining to the physical wellness of a company’s employees. They want to make sure that companies aren’t “working employees to the bone”.
S-Cube is part of an entire digital, cushioned, connected shoe insert. The sensors in the insert are designed to measure all kinds of data including weight, movement and stress. This data can then be used by companies to see if they are physically overworking their employees. They can make labor adjustments and mechanical enhancements, within their own factories, that allow better, more healthy decision making.
The technology can also be used to monitor the user’s workout and their stress factors. For instance if you were training for a 5k or a marathon, you would be able to make decisions about the way you run that may put less stress on your body and even make your run faster. It’s technology we’ve never seen in a shoe before.
Digit Sole is creating it’s own shoe and working with major “work safety shoe” partners in Europe, Canada and the U.S. to bring the product to market in the fall of 2018.
