Former Second Lady Jill Biden To Keynote BbWorld 17
Jill Biden, the wife of former (and most popular) Vice President Joe Biden is the keynote speaker at this year’s Blackboard World conference in New Orleans. The lifelong educator spent much of her time as the second lady of the United States advocating for the community college’s role in American education.
The 66 year old Biden holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Delaware. She’s spent decades teaching both high school and community college. In fact, while she was the second lady of the United States she also taught English full time in Northern Virginia at Northern Virginia Community College.
Teaching and education has always been important to Biden. She married the former Vice President in 1977 and he has always been supportive of her career.
“Being a teacher is who I am, and I did not feel that I could live Joe’s life. And he understood that. And I think that’s one of the things he probably likes about me, that I am independent, I do have my own career.” Biden told NPR in 2013.
In Washington DC she helped organize and host the first ever White House Summit on Community College alongside President Obama.
Although Arne Duncan was the Secretary of Education throughout most of the Obama administration, Dr. Biden was also a big advisor to the President.
“Dr. Biden unquestionably had a big influence in shaping administrative and congressional attitudes with regard to the importance of this sector of the education system. With this influence, the Obama Administration made historic investments in financial aid, tripling investments in tax credits for college expenses, increasing the maximum Pell grant by over $800, and making the financial aid process easier and faster to navigate.” Katie Blot, the Chief Strategy Officer at Blackboard said on their blog.
Dr. Biden is uniquely positioned to speak at BbWorld 17. She will be able to provide insight into things that really work in the K-12 and higher ed level as well as shed some light on education from the public sector. She views community college as a strong driver for the economy and wants higher education to be accessible to more people.
