EDUCAUSE Preview: Alertus Is The Mass Notification System That UVA Trusts
The UVA campus in Charlottesville Virginia was crowded this weekend. Like many colleges and universities, the UVA system is in between their summer session and their fall semester, which for the Cavaliers, starts next week on August 22nd. All eyes were on Charlottesville though, as a a group of white nationalists, protested the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from a park, that also bared his name. The weekend’s events started with a march of people holding tiki torches Friday evening. It was to culminate at the park with a “unite the right” rally on Saturday which was halted by law enforcement.
While the University of Virginia campus was a little lighter than usual, University President Teresa A. Sullivan knew it was vital to keep all of her students and stakeholders informed.
The University of Virginia is one of many schools that uses Alertus for the campus wide alerts and communications. Alertus offers a wide variety of features which insure that just about everyone can be notified of any kind of emergency at a moments notice. Alertus can notify the entire campus and all of it’s stakeholders through messaging, alert beacon devices, desktop notifications, the Alertus mobile app, campus wide digital signage, cable tv override, loud speakers, telephone systems, and even LED marquees.
Alertus, and their competitors, have to make sure their systems are ready for anything from an active shooter, to a tornado, to fires, and even protests and events that turn violent. Mass notification systems from Alertus go beyond the text or email message.
“Relying solely on personal notification for emergencies can limit your campus’s ability to reach intended audiences due to specific challenges including restricted phone access in classrooms and cellular network failures during emergencies. The Alertus system extends beyond personal notification by integrating with existing infrastructure and filling gaps in coverage with innovative alerting devices to create a multilayered notification system.” the company says.
