When first introduced, e-textbooks were thought of as the digital companion of actual textbooks or maybe the step child of traditional books. The naysayers thought we would never see a day where digital textbooks dominated college campuses, and heck K-12 schools as well.

In the last few years we’ve started to realize the clear advantages to digital textbooks, like the ability to update them without having to shell out $180 per student, or the ability to embed interactive content. The e-Textbook has changed the way of learning, at least for years to come.

Now we have to figure out the best place to get the e-Textbooks that our colleges and universities need. In the traditional textbook days, a salesperson would visit your campus with a suitcase full of books or you would visit a booth at a conference that was stacked floor to ceiling with the latest offerings. e-Textbooks have gone the way of e-book platforms. You can click over to one website and find everything you need, or can you.

VitalSource has secured the relationships with all of the major e-Textbook providers. They’ve ensured that their library of digital textbooks is the most complete library available to higher education.

VitalSource’s, VitalSource Bookshelf has proven that they are the best when it comes to higher education. Their platform is the most widely used e-textbook delivery platform in higher education. They have content from more than 1000 of the world’s top academic publishers.  They also have a wide range of e-textbooks with accessibility features for students with special needs.

The e-Textbook model works similarly to traditional textbooks. Where students used to have to go to their campus book store and purchase physical books, now they can go to their school’s branded bookshelf and quickly find the e-Textbooks they need for the courses they’re taking.

It’s familiar to them. Keep in mind that the new Gen-Z students are used to doing everything online. They’ve been reading e-books on an Amazon Kindle or even iBooks for years. The familiarity is there and they see how easy it is to get just what they need for school.

VitalSource also offers an e-textbook rental program which means that students don’t have to shell out the expense of purchasing a full e-textbook to own. They rent it for the semester they need it and move on. Unlike traditional textbooks, they don’t come back with highlighter, bent pages and love notes on them.

For decades students suffered from the cost prohibitive nature of the textbook economy. Many students would forego purchasing the materials they really needed for class and their studies would suffer as a result.  VitalSource recently commissioned a study from Wakefield Research that examined this notion and found that 85 percent of college and university students surveyed have either waited to buy course materials until after the first day of class or opted not to purchase the materials altogether. That’s up 5% from the previous year.  91% of those students attributed that to cost.

“With college costs on the rise and student outcomes lagging, offering more affordable options on critical course materials is just common sense,” said Pep Carrera, Chief Operating Officer of VitalSource®, a leading provider of digital learning materials. “In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of students who are forgoing course materials due to costs. This is alarming, but even more disturbing is the consequence this decision has on students’ grades.”

VitalSource’s digital inclusive access programs make sure that more students have access to the materials they need to be successful in college.
