zyBooks Provides The Most Up To Date Relevant Information For College Students Studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
For decades professors and instructors in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields were crippled by bulky textbooks that were pretty much outdated the day they were published. STEM subjects have always been the fastest to update. Some new scientific information could be released tomorrow that may invalidate a century’s old concept.
That’s why in 2012 Smita Bakshi, a UC Davis Electrical Computer Engineering Professor and Frank Vahid, a Computer Science and Engineering Professor at the University of California, Riverside teamed up to do something about it. With technology like the web and digital content available to professors and students there was no excuse to continue to work within the limitations of traditional textbooks.
Both professors saw that there was a “…huge mismatch between students and traditional (and increasingly expensive and bloated) textbooks, forcing instructors to teach with one hand tied behind their back. Meanwhile, the real power of the web for learning—interactivity—has barely been tapped.” the company says on their website.
The ethos of zyBooks is driven by three main ideas; Student Success, Engaged Classroom and Quality Materials. All of those are joined together by technology. The current six year graduation rate is just 59% and for students in STEM degrees the number is even less. That’s particular alarming considering that STEM skills and careers are the driving force in the economy in the present time and that’s only going to become greater.
zyBooks has a team of in house zyBooks authors and a network of contributing authors, all subject matter experts. Currently there are 25 zyBooks available with more content being produced all the time.
