A New York startup called Lilu has created the first automated pumping bra that solves a lot of the problems that today’s new moms have with breast feeding.

Expectant mothers, new mothers and even their spouses and partners know that there are several benefits to breast feeding over bottle feeding. These benefits start with the most common one, it’s healthier and breast milk provides more vital nutrients, in better supply and faster, to a newborn baby.  There are also several psychological benefits to breast feeding because the mother/child bond formed in the womb isn’t so abruptly cut off, as it is with bottle feeding.

Over the past decade there’s been a rise in the amount of women that want to breast feed their babies. With all of the health and psychological benefits, along with a global push to go more natural, breast feeding seems like the most logical thing to do. Except for many new moms it’s hard. Today’s moms are always on the go, wanting to get on with their lives as fast as possible, right after having a baby. This makes it extremely hard to breast feed and extremely hard to pump using just a traditional pump.

Lilu is the first automated pumping bra with compression. This means that women wear Lilu which attaches to most standard pumps, freeing up their hands to do other things like check their phones, write emails or work on that proposal.

In addition to the hands free nature of Lilu it also adds compressions to the pumping. This gives mothers up to 50% more milk per session. Also research performed by Stanford Children’s Hospital has shown that breast compression helps increase and maintain milk supply in the long term! Compression also brings forward “hindmilk” which is a thicker milk packed with nutrient and beneficial fats that’s found deeper in the breast.

The company was founded by Adriana Vazquez Ortiz an MIT graduate with a Masters in Product Design from the University of Pennsylvania.

Lilu is just about ready to head into the homes of new moms everywhere. They start shipping on March 30th.

Lilu is one of the top 50 finalists in the 2018 SXSW Accelerator. See them at SXSW Interactive, March 9-13th in Austin Texas. Find out more on their website at
