On Wednesday, the L.A. Dodgers announced the opening of applications for the second class of the LA Dodgers Sports and Entertainment Accelerator. The program is a joint venture between the MLB club and R/GA. The accelerator will look to build on the success of the first cohort.
The program is quite unique in a number of different ways. First, unlike nearly every other accelerator, the Dodgers Accelerator is not limited to early-stage startups:
Startups of any size will be considered. We welcome growth-stage startups that have achieved initial product-market-fit, as well as early-stage startups that are developing new technologies, products, and services and are looking to accelerate in the industry.1
Also, the value for the participating startups is quite unique. Rather than focusing entirely on product development and/or mentorship – those are still major components however – the Dodgers Accelerator has built in access to a massive, captivated audience. Dodgers Stadium is one of the heaviest attended venues in the entire world.
This second class of the program will look to build on the many success of the inaugural accelerator. In fact, the successes led directly to the continuation of the Dodgers Accelerator. The Dodgers CFO, Tucker Kain, said as much in a statement:
The ingenuity that the Dodgers and R/GA witnessed in the 10 companies selected to participate in the first accelerator has made our decision to continue the program an easy one…The response we received for our first class from across the sports and technology industry was a strong validation of the value of the program and we look forward to continuing this momentum with the next class.2
Applications for the program can be found on F6S and are open until 10 June 2016.
