AOL Co-Founder, Revolution Founder and Co-Founder Of Startup America Plans Sixth Rise Of Rest Bus Tour
Steve Case and his wife Jean have been committed to startups and innovation throughout their entire married lives. Recently, with all of their actual children out of the house, they listed their McLean home, one of the largest private residences in the Northern Virginia Suburbs of DC, for $49.5 million dollars. Like most empty nesters, they’re ready to jump in an RV and head out on the open road. But there’s just one thing. Steve and Jean have done this before, five other times.
When I first started nibletz.com in 2010 I was heavily involved in Startup America in the southeast. Startup America was initiative set up by the Obama Administration, Steve Case, Scott Case (Priceline’s founding CTO but no relation to Steve), Donna Harris and Evan Burfield. As a regional champion I found myself at events across the country meeting up with one of the three Case’s to spread the startup gospel, the rise of the rest, the start where U are movement.
Case firmly believes (as do we) that good companies can start anywhere. Rather than compete with Silicon Valley (I have a high aversion to calling your town Silicon Anything see this piece), embrace what your community has to offer and push your company to the limit.
Now Case is planning his sixth Rise Of The Rest tour. He’s committed to investing another $500,000 in startups across five regions. The next tour will begin in Central Pennsylvania where Case will travel to Harrisburg, Lancaster and York on October 10th, followed by Ann Arbor (MI) on October 11th, Indianapolis (IN) on October 12th, and Columbus (OH) on October 13th. The tour will make a final stop in Green Bay (WI) the following Tuesday, October 17th.
The Rise of the Rest is a nationwide effort powered by Revolution to showcase founders in emerging startup ecosystems across the U.S. SInce the tour launched in 2014, Steve Case has traveled more than 6,000 miles on a bus to visit 26 diverse cities and personally invested more than $4 million in local startups. Previous tours included visits to: Baltimore, Buffalo, Detroit, Charleston, Des Moines, Nashville, and Omaha (see the list of past cities here).
“Rise of the Rest celebrates and funds emerging startup ecosystems across the U.S.,”said Steve Case. “We are thrilled to hit the road once again to find the companies driving innovation and creating jobs across the country.”
During the upcoming tour, the Revolution team and partners will:
- Bring together local entrepreneurs, businesses, non-profits, universities, and public officials to discuss the opportunities and challenges of fostering startup growth;
- Hold a pitch competition where a local startup will receive $100,000 investment; and
- Host a fireside chat for the broader community to discuss the opportunities for regional entrepreneurship today.
Partners joining Revolution on the tour include: Google for Entrepreneurs, Salesforce for Startups, Village Capital, Startup Grind, Tech.co, The Economic Innovation Group, Engine, Startup Champion’s Network, and Verge.
