We Spoke With The Team Behind The In3DC Incubator At The WEDC House At South By Southwest
Since 2015 when Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser took office, she’s been on a rampage to keep the entrepreneurial fire going in Washington DC.
Late last year Bowser announced her “Pathways To Inclusion” report, the District’s first ever roadmap to becoming the Nation’s Premiere Hub for Inclusive Tech and Innovation. Specifically the report details three goals.
- To create 5,000 new jobs for underrepresented workers
- 500 new tech businesses founded by underrepresented entrepreneurs
- become #1 by fostering the most inclusive tech culture on the East Coast
To that end, Aaron Saunders, the CEO of Clearly Innovative Inc and the CEO of Luma Lab TechEd Initiative set out to create a space that well help further those goals. The new incubator, called the Inclusive Innovation Incubator or In3DC for short, is that space. They plan on opening later this spring.
The space is part incubator and part co-working, surrounded by bootcamps, training and mentorship programs. In3DC will also provide workshops and events that range from development and IT, to business development, raising funds, talking to investors and financial literacy. They will also host a wide range of competitions like hackathons and pitch contests.
“Innovation Incubator will be in Washington DC on the edge of the campus of Howard University. We are looking to partner with community organizations, local businesses, and the office of the Mayor to bring together programs and services that might not be financially attainable from other groups, in an environment that is welcoming to the community we are committed to supporting.” Saunders said in a medium.com post.
Like other similar incubator/coworking hybrids, the coworkers become community members and ecosystem partners to help bring out the best in everyone in the space. In3DC will offer a variety of coworking plans including: standard membership (drop in), open desk, dedicated desk and private office. Their pricing is set a little less than comparable spaces.
Kellyann Kirkpatrick is the Program Manager at In3DC. She also handles educational programming for Saunders’ other ventures, also support technology and entrepreneurship. We spoke with Kelleyann in the video above.
