Cincinnati Startup Vegy Vida Inks Deal With Walmart For Distribution In 1400 Locations
Cincinnati is the king of consumer goods and products, when it comes to startups. The city is ripe for retail as well as it’s downtown is home to Kroger, Macy’s and Procter & Gamble’s global headquarters. There’s also The Brandery, startup accelerator, now in it’s 7th year and even Northern Kentucky University’s Inkubator. There are plenty of resources to get any kind of CPG off the ground.
Vegy Vida is one of those startups. The company, that’s created kid friendly dips, is a graduate of NKU’s Inkubator program. Vegy Vida is a line of all natural, non GMO dips. The secret sauce is the use of cucumber extract to block the bitterness kids usually find in vegetables. The company wants children to get used to eating vegetables. Cincinnati.com reports that most “vegetable” products for kids, mask the veggies altogether or sneaks them in, with artificial flavors. When that happens kids may get their vitamins and minerals but they don’t develop a positive taste for vegetables.
Vegy Vida’s co-founder, Josh Young, explains that kids have three times more taste buds than adults, “ Things are much more bitter to kids,” he explained. Young’s wife Heather, is a food scientist that formulated Vegy Vida after her own experience with kids and vegetables.
“While Josh and I were on family vacation I realized my nieces weren’t eating their vegetables,” Heather Young told the Cincinnati Business Courier last year. “I asked what could your mommy and daddy do to get you to eat your vegetables and they said make them taste like cotton candy.”
The dips are currently available in Remke stores as well as Marsh and Dorothy Lane stores, Jungle Jim’s and Madison’s at Findlay Market. The big news though, is that they’ve inked a deal with Walmart. The consumer giant will start selling Vegy Vida in 1400 of their stores.
Vegy Vida is available in creamy ranch, cheesy cheddar, cool buffalo, zesty southwest and savory bacon flavors.
